Mt. Haleakala

hiking trails into the crater

Doesn't John Harrison look happy to be sightseeing?

John Harrison and his Uncle Jon

The crater atop Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano, is the highest point in Maui. Ever since we were in Maui on our honeymoon (almost SIX years ago!!), David has talked about wanting to go up to the top of Mt. Haleakala at sunrise. Sunrises atop the mountain are supposed to be beautiful.....but, the drive from our condo to the top of the mountain is about 2 hours.....the sun comes up way before 6am so getting up around 2:30-3 am did not sound too appealing to me with a baby. David was very understanding and we decided to leave midmorning and forego the sunrise views. Once we got to the top of the mountain, we parked and hiked a short trail up to a lookout point that gave views of the entire volcanic crater. You can see from the pictures that the crater was beautiful and had a wide variety of colors ranging from red to gree to brown to gray. We are so glad that we took a day to see the amazing sights from atop the mountain---we truly have a magnificent Creator!
