What a contrast . . .

John Harrison loves watching videos of him and Elise on my iPhone. The contrast between the kids now and a year ago (even between now and several months ago) is incredible! John Harrison is speaking in full sentences, is a full-on negotiator (wonder which parent he got that from?!), and has an amazing memory. Even well over a year ago we could already see he had a great memory (first noticed this trait when he was a little over a year old and began using noises and motions to indicate where to turn to go to my parents' house), but it is becoming more evident. Lest you read this thinking I am one of those bragging parents who thinks her child is smarter than Newton himself, please think again. I am not drawing any conclusions on my son's intellectual ability, just observing what I think is an above average memory--time will tell... Anyways, I will just give one example--the other night John Harrison brought up an event from last summer when we went to Texas de Brazil with David's parents and brother to celebrate his brother's acceptance to med school. John Harrison remembered what car we took, who drove each way (different people drove going and coming), and where each person sat in the car. I was impressed, although maybe a bit biased since I am speaking of my own son. Hopefully as he gets older, John Harrison will use his ability in practical ways!
Elise is saying a few words such ad "this, that, there, dog, dada," as well as an occasional "mama." I finished nursing her tonight and she looked up with a smile and said "dada"-she loves daddy:). She is making it clear that she will walk on her own schedule and will not be coaxed into walking a minute sooner. I thought for sure that we'd have first steps before 1, but I was wrong. She will sit still in one spot to play for quite a while--quite the opposite of her brother at the same age!!! Everyday it amazes me how well she plays by herself when I am cooking or otherwise occupied. She seems pretty mild mannered and easy going. Thankfully she had had a recent breakthrough and has slept through the night for about the past 5-6 night!! Maybe we are on to something. Unfortunately, she has had a rough time napping, though, but I will take a full night's sleep over good naps, although both is preferable.
On a different note, if you have ever wondered why I have more pics of Elise than John Harrison in recent posts, it all boils down to opportunity-- our son will rarely sit still for the camera while Elise loves to smile and pose (I think it is the age).
